Fall in love all over again with the PANTON HEART CONE CHAIR. Verner Panton’s timeless creation of a curvaceous yet comfortable club chair takes its name from its expressive heart-shaped silhouette. Made of a glass-fibre reinforced shell, with a light upholstery and seat cushion, this contemporary twist on the traditional wing-back chair is futuristic yet understated. It seems to defy gravity as it stands on its satin stainless steel base.
Danish designer Verner Panton (1926-1998) was one of the most influential people in design development during the 1950’s post-war era. He spearhead the growing pop style design movement that would later explode in the 1960’s-1970’s scene. Unlike his Danish contemporaries whose focus was on wooden furniture, Panton introduced unconventional ideas of design. He utilized innovative materials and production techniques not only in furnishings, but lighting and textiles as well. His use of geometric shapes along with a wild enthusiasm for color became his signature. He was a pioneer that helped shape the future of contemporary and modern design.
The Panton Heart Cone Chair
Although Panton is more well-known for his iconic plastic, S-curved chair, the HEART CONE CHAIR is probably his most striking creation. He designed the beloved classic in 1959 as a successor to his Cone Chair, which he made the year prior in 1958 for his parents’ restaurant in what was his first major commission. The Cone Chair was so dazzlingly modern that the police had to order its removal from the window of a New York city shop due to the traffic and chaos its presence created. In the 1960’s Panton began his long-standing relationship with Swiss family-owned Vitra, who still produces his designs today. Vitra faithfully re-issues many of his classics in close collaboration with the Panton estate.
In the 1990’s, Panton revived the HEART CONE CHAIR by replacing its original cross-shaped foot with a round plate. He also made the two halves of the heart narrower and added a leather option for upholstery.
Today, the HEART CONE CHAIR is quintessentially beautiful, widely celebrated, and continues to charm and captivate people everywhere. It has been endlessly photographed and lives in posh, stylish interiors around the world.
“Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colors. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting.” ~ Verner Panton
