THE NEED FOR COLLABORATIVE OFFICE FURNITURE

Humans have constant, changing needs. It is the job of the office to rise to them. In the 1980s, people wanted their own personal space to work in, and cubicles were created in response. By the time the late 1990s came, the urge for social interactions prevailed and open spaces dominated the office, only to be criticized for its lack of privacy. Even so, the open plan office is the most utilized workplace design because at our core, humans are social beings that do better together. It’s the right idea—just badly executed.

How do we adjust to our employees’ needs when they seem to be on the opposite ends of the spectrum? We redefine the balance between privacy and collaboration to create the collaborative office.

WHAT IS A COLLABORATIVE OFFICE?

What is a collaborative office? Ultimately, it is a workspace that brings employees together to create connections and generate ideas.  It is made up of a mix of private offices and common areas for workers to choose how they want to work throughout the day. The collaborative office is a trend still evolving in the workplace since the last few decades or so, with a wide array of collaborative office furniture becoming more and more available. In the past, the closest thing there was to it were meetings in conference rooms, which were too formal and stifled openness.

THE MAKINGS OF COLLABORATION

The collaborative office should be made with these ideas in mind: teamwork, technological resources, comfort, and accommodation. Teamwork helps people feel inspired and supported when surrounded by others with the same goal. Technological resources can pave the way for easy collaboration. For example, providing tools to access platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams can connect employees from all over the globe. Comfort in terms of natural lighting, cozy couches, ergonomic chairs, and acoustics has been proven to stimulate innovative ideas by making people feel at ease and focused.  Accommodations should be made to cater all needs and personalities. These are typically collaborative office furniture that can range from seating and table arrangements, a variety of private, semi-private and open-plan configurations, and different types of furniture layouts. Remember that variety is key to accommodate multiple types of work styles.

FRUITS OF COLLABORATION

The collaborative office space design brings many benefits: increased performance, improved social interactions, reduced stress levels in the workplace, and heightened creativity. Studies from Stanford University show that working with other team members isn’t a distraction. In fact, it allowed people to concentrate on their tasks 64% longer than individual workers and made their engagement, motivation, and success rates surge. Sharing a collaborative space is proven to help organizations flourish because working together results in better understanding of fellow colleagues and productive work relationships. When employees feel like they are a part of a community, they are more satisfied with their jobs and lead to an enhanced company culture. Additionally, working as a group generates more innovative solutions than working alone. Beyond the mental and productivity benefits, the collaborative design for the office offers fiscal advantages too: it is cost efficient, allowing companies to cut down on costs a traditional office would often require.

A DYNAMIC DISCUSSION

Keep things fluid & versatile when you need to collaborate on-the-go.

COLLABORATIVE SPACES UNDEFINED

A collaborative office layout takes on many faces. In terms of the communal areas, any place where people can gather qualifies. That means that they tend to take the shape of conference spaces, cafeterias, lounges, and huddle rooms for spur-of-the-moment gatherings.

Creating a haven to share and exchange ideas  require proper collaborative office furniture selection. After the pandemic, it was shown that companies thrived when employees had the freedom to work the way they want to in more informal settings. The collaborative office design of today need to be organic; adjusting to the needs of employees to foster teamwork while giving the individual control over how they work and creating an environment where they can do that. With people constantly coming in and out of the office—or even living in a different country—collaborative office furniture is key. Furniture such as media tables, conference tables, pods, modular seating, and dividers are perfect for this and can match the spontaneity of creativity.

A PLACE FOR SOLITUDE

That is not to say that privacy has no place in the collaborative office space design. Though open floor plans can encourage creativity, they can also be loud and distracting. The modern workplace is easily accessible—maybe even too much, with how widely available workers are. That is why there are three factors to think about for privacy: sound, sight, and solitude. Interior designers need to examine collaborative office furniture solutions that still give people their own space within shared workspaces. Can workers hear each other? Can they see each other? Is there a place for individuals?

COLLABORATIVE OFFICE FURNITURE FOR PRIVACY

Establish quiet areas for employees who want to concentrate on their tasks individually. One way to do so is by adding mobile partitions and dividers. They are ideal for this situation because they’re capable of being rearranged at a moment’s notice to provide privacy without boxing people into cubicles. Dividers and planters can also double as acoustic solutions that muffle ambient noise and reduce visual distractions while introducing nature into the workplace.

PEAS IN A POD

Another solution would be to install work pods to the office. Work pods are the modern replacement for private offices and cubicles. It is an enclosed space where employees can work quietly while still maintaining a visual connection to the rest of the office. Products from companies such as Snowsound, Loftwall, Trendway, and OFS fulfill these aspects. Collaborative design furniture should include acoustic solutions, privacy walls and architectural walls – that are crucial to carving out individual spaces.

“WE” VS “ME”

Collaborative design is the new name to an old concept. History has shown that some of the best ideas come from working together, and office design has struggled trying to replicate that success. But recent years have taught office space design to be flexible and fluid. Spaces are no longer clearly defined and separated. The modern office is an ecosystem—a living, breathing organism where the lines are blurred. Collaborative environments are the newest chapter in office history. With the careful balance of privacy and collaboration, there is no “we” vs. “me,” there is only continuous innovation and growing satisfaction.
